I stood, pulling at my gloves, one finger after the other, and threw them away as I swayed on my feet and turned toward Haider.
“Don’t—” His voice dropped an octave. “—do anything stupid.”
I stared at his locked jaw and the eyes that darted between mine, and with the release of a shallow breath, I raised my hand and slapped the man across his face, the crack of it instantly swallowed by the silence that fell across the arena.
Haider’s face remained tilted to the side as the reality of what happened registered. With unnatural smoothness, his raging eyes met mine, and he towered over me with a step forward. It was all the proximity I needed. With a war cry, I began clawing at his face, scratching any part of skin my nails could find.
My voice was nothing more than a wheezing cry as, one strike after the other, I gashed the man in front of me, feeling his blood and skin bunch up in my nails.
